What is a Flotation Tank and why should I Float?

A flotation tank is a large soundproof pod containing water with a high concentration of Epsom Salt. The salty water allows the person to float, and because the air and water is heated to same temperature as the body, 93.5 f, the sensation of water or air on the skin is greatly reduced giving the impression that you are effortlessly floating in nothingness. The solution is run through a UV sterilization and filtration system after each use to ensure our tanks are 100% sanitary. The goal of a sensory deprivation tank is to create an extremely relaxing environment where you are free from distractions enabling clients to improve concentration and relax free from sensory input.

Frequent Float Questions And How To Maximize Your Float Experience

The tanks look intimidating…what if I’m claustrophobic / afraid?

It’s not as scary as it looks. The space inside the flotation tank is large, approximately 4 feet wide by 8.5 feet long. You are free to exit the tank or get back in at your own will. You can even float with the door open. Since there is an absence of space, time and sensation it is difficult to feel claustrophobic within the tank.

How are the tanks kept clean and disinfected?

There is 1000 pounds of medical grade Epsom salt dissolved in each of our tanks. Salinity is at 1.30 grams per cubic centimeter. The solution is so high in saline that no living microorganism can survive in there. After each session, the entire volume of the solution is pumped out and filtered through a three part filtration and sterilization system utilizing Ultra Violet light and H2O2. UV is the safest most effective system available. It maintains the water’s soft, clean and crystal clear appearance. In addition all clients are required to shower prior to entering the tank.

How often should I float?

While you can float every day without harm, we find that the relaxing effects of a one-hour float typically last beyond that day. For best results, we recommend regular sessions, and many clients find that floating once or twice a week provides the most benefits. The more you float, the better you feel!

I’m a bigger guy / gal, can I still float in your tanks?

Unless you’re a yeti/bigfoot over 8 feet tall or over 500 pounds, you’re good to go.

How long do people usually stay in the tank?

We recommend 60 or 90 minutes for first time floaters. As you become more experienced you may want to bump your sessions up to 2-3 hours for a deeper experience.

Will I be able to resume my daily activities when I get out?

Yes, but it’s a great idea to ease back into activity gently. Giving yourself plenty of time to reflect and enjoy your “post-float glow” is a great idea, try to set your session up so you’re not in a rush after your session.

Is there a cumulative effect of using the tank on a regular basis?

Yes. There seems to be a cumulative effect with consistent use of the tank. Relaxation is a learned art that needs practice and gets better and better with time.

Do you wear anything in the tank?

Since it is a private experience, most people don’t wear any clothing. Anything you wear will press against your body, becoming a distraction. In this regard imagine it as similar to getting into your bathtub.

How can I maximize the benefits of my float? Pre and Post Float Recommendations:

Most importantly…relax. The tank will help but if you arrive relaxed, the experience will be more beneficial for you.
There are a few additional things to consider.

  • Try not to shave right before arriving. You can still come in if you do but high concentrations of salt may burn during your session and make it difficult to relax.
  • Remove your contacts prior to floating (bring a container to store them in).
  • Try to avoid caffeine or other stimulants the whole day prior to floating and after floating, it may interfere with your ability to relax and can hinder your session.
  • Coming into your float session with a light to empty stomach is best for optimal results. If the body is trying to process food during your session it makes it more difficult for your system to slow down and relax. We also recommend eating very fresh, alive food before your session and after your session. Fried or heavy foods can also hinder your session and dull down your post float glow!
  • Combining a massage, hydromassage, meditation, sauna session, inversion and or a foam rolling session before or after your session can greatly enhance your experience at our center. All of our services are designed in such a way that they compliment each other amazingly.

Would I drown in the flotation tank if I fell asleep?

It is not possible to drown in the tank. The water is only about 10″ deep and has a very very high density of salt. This water is buoyant and will support you regardless of your size or weight. If you were to turn over the salt in the water would sting your eyes and wake you. Since you are floating you do not need to know how to swim. Additionally it’s not dangerous to fall asleep in the tank.

What happens if I get salt water in my eyes?

It’s going to sting! But no worries…you can just open the door, grab a towel, dab the salt water off, then get back in the tank.

Are there situations in which I will not be permitted to use the flotation tank?

We will not allow you to float if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Infectious skin or respiratory disorders
  • Open wounds
  • Incontinence
  • Epilepsy or serious mental conditions
  • A high-risk pregnancy
  • Have colored or permed your hair within 7 days
  • Under the influence of any drug or alcohol
  • Currently menstruating
  • Under 18 without parental presence
  • We expect you to inform us of any conditions for your own safety and the safety of other floaters! We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone at any time.

I’m pregnant. Can floating harm my baby?

Absolutely not. In fact, pregnant women probably get more relief from the float tank than anyone else. Just lying on a bed can be extremely uncomfortable for a woman in the later stages of pregnancy due to the massive gravitational strain placed on the body. The float tank is a wonderful haven for pregnant women. We do, however, recommend that pregnant women avoid floating during the first trimester. If you have any concerns about the effects of floating on your pregnancy, we ask you to consult and get permission from your physician before you float.
